Understand sleep disorders and their treatment

This 6 week online course, covers all aspects of sleep medicine and technology. Starting with foundation knowledge about normal respiratory and sleep physiology, it will also cover all sleep disorders and their treatment, including practical application of sleep disorders assessment and treatment. You will be taught about current practice in sleep science, as well as introduced to new and exciting advances for the future.

Learning outcomes

  • Gain an understanding of normal sleep in adults and paediatrics, normal sleep processes, and the role of sleep in overall health
  • Recognise and identify sleep disorders in adults and children, including sleep related breathing disorders, movement disorders, insomnia and disorders of excessive sleepiness, and the consequences thereof
  • Describe the role and limitations of various treatment modalities for obstructive sleep apnoea, including CPAP, oral appliance, and conservative treatments
  • Understand the relevant components of respiratory anatomy and physiology and how this applies to nocturnal hypoventilation and its treatment

Course delivery method

This 6 week online course is made up of online pre-recorded lectures and live Zoom sessions. All live Zoom sessions are scheduled at 6.30pm-7.30pm AEDST unless otherwise stated. See below the Zoom session schedule (please note, subject to change):

Course pre-requisites

This course is an intensive introduction to the field of sleep medicine. It is essential for all those new to the field and recommended for those who would like to refresh their knowledge base. It can be undertaken as a standalone course or as an introduction to the masters' degree and diploma courses in sleep medicine offered through the University of Sydney.

Participants must have completed the 6 week online course prior to attending the in person component.

Additional Course Information

  • Sleep Medicine - IP Communications, will be referenced frequently throughout the course as well as be a required reading resource. It is highly recommended that participants purchase this prior to commencing the course. It can be purchased as an ebook or hard copy.
  • The renowned, Professor Colin Sullivan, along with a team of 20 sleep professionals of varying backgrounds and specialised skills will present this course.
  • This course has been granted 32 Continuing Education Credits for those with the RPSGT qualification, by the Australian & New Zealand Sleep Science Association.
